Charity Regatta 2007

Thanks to M-1, we have these snapshots! Thanks to Mark, we had two fine spinnaker sets. Thanks to Al we had excellent timely grinding. Thanks to Dr. Luv for mark roundings! Thanks to this teamwork, Psyche'e Song finished in the top half! (Carpe Diem got by us before the 17-knot winds arrived!)

Wet Wednesday, 2-6 Knots

It appears from these photos that there is little apparent motion. That's accurate: there was little apparent wind. On this afternoon, Psyché's Song may have been the last boat to round D-Mark. (Perhaps Sea Note was back there.) But from there on, Psyché's Song drifted past a number of lighter boats. After rounding H-Mark and heading DDW, we lashed the oscillating main amidst-ship to safe the wear on the rigging and to protect heads of crew. It stabilized the boat some and was thus preferable to taking the main down. We carried the spinnaker all the way to the finish which was a few minutes before sundown. Although we passed many boats, we did not save our corrected time. We corrected out to 6th place among seven finishing boats, all of which were awarded trophies.

Summer # 2

With three members of the Hard Core in N'Orleans, John Jeffreys joined Mark on Foredeck. Skipper got greedy on the last leg, trying to lee-bow Browser in a dying breeze and lost two or three other boats. We still received a glass for 11th place.

Fun Race!

Photos by Lander Nicolait!

The first thing I notice is that Psyché’s Song’s main is more closely trimmed than those two boats’ ahead.

Wet Wednesday - Spring Series '07 Ends

Somehow, with all of our DNS's, Psyché's Song pulls out a 4th for the series! Good teamwork is what it's all about!

Look Who's Back!

Good thing Al's back, too, because 3/5's of the Team's hard core was out with the flu! In about 6-7 knots, out of a dozen boats, we beat Ferdinand. Sans Spinnaker!

Platform Grace Race

All boats start at 11:00 Our next weekend race occurs just before the weekend, on Friday, 20 April, all boats starting at 11:00 A.M. It's an all-day affair, what with the sail down to Oil Platform Grace (off Ventura) and power-sailing return to Santa Barbara. This race is one of the year's most unique events, well worth giving up a Friday at the office. Because of the start time is earlier than normal, Dock Time is 10:00 a.m.

I'm really hoping the Hard Core (you know who I mean!) can make it. Please comment below! Thanks!

Wet Wednesday Squall

Here's what happened to 2nd Wind. She may be out of commission for a month or more. But, Thank God, everyone is okay. This stalwart crew was bloodied but unbowed.

For the first time in her long and distinguished career, Psyché's Song, did not leave her slip. I have to confess that her skipper & crew elected to drink the afternoon away in boat and bar rather than set to sea and risk uncertain carnage in winds gusting in the 40's. I think it was good to set a precedent whereby there are known conditions in which we will not venture out in extreme conditions in pursuit of honors at the risk of life and limb. Still, it was difficult to watch. One of our closest competitors, Liz's Diamond, took line honors!

I love our super-light, super-roach, fully battened mainsail. But we have learned we can't reef without tearing it. So, I am wondering if Psyché's Song should also be equipped with a storm main:
  • ¾ hoist (because mast stability is not an issue)
  • No battens (for storage purposes)
  • Sail cloth as strong (almost) as sheet metal
  • Loose-footed (to deploy over regular main which is strapped down to the boom).
Other ideas?

A New Look

This revision of Psyché's Song's site is a work-in-progress. (Reactions and suggestions are welcome, but holding your breath won't work because blogging politics still weighs heavily on my time.)

Opening Day - 2007

Not a memorable race that day,
given the light wind.
