My son says it best:
One of the top 5 U.S. Soccer games of all time....Only ... the late moment drama of yesterday's game. In terms of the entire game story line, the arching drama is really first on my list now. That cross will be the stuff of legends--must have been 45 yards, pin-point perfect. Backs broken all over the field--devastation for Brazil. You could see the will drain from their exhausted faces--I knew that Brazil was done, and that we were moving on. An incredible moment. The Brazilian star, Marta, is so good you love to hate her. But the USA has a very special team.
Megan Rapinoe has always been my 2nd favorite player on this team. She's usually a 2nd half sub, but she always lights up the place with her placements. In one of the greatest personal play-by-plays ever delivered, Rapinoe said,
I just took a touch and fucking smacked it with my left foot...I don't think I've ever hit a ball like that with my left foot. I got it to the back post and Beast in the air just got a hold of it.Iconic. Brandi Chastain and Mia Hamm move over! (Well maybe move over if this current group finish off on the World Cup, anyways.)
I happened to be out getting lunch, and watched the 2nd half on. I missed Brazil's goal in OT, but watched the rest of overtime, and then the PK's. That cross and header for the tie in stoppage time was just amazing. Especially for the USA to play most of the 2nd half and all of OT short a player due to the red card. It was a great game.

ReplyDeleteI once asked the five-time FIFA Women's World Player of the Year, Marta, what it is about the U.S. that makes it so hard to beat. She pointed to her head, leading me to think she meant the Americans were strong in the air. "No, no," she explained. "It's the mentality."
USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
ReplyDeleteCook up some French Toast today!
Japan beat Germany and now Sweden. USA is next - too much to reach for? Go for broke Japan!
ReplyDeleteMarta complained about the competitiveness of the American 'Mentality'. She never played against this Japanese team. Is that true? I think Team USA should beware on Sunday. Be very wary!
ReplyDeleteUSA will have Buehl-Dozer back from suspension. We'll be okay!
ReplyDeleteI'm not excited about the rumor that Megan Rapinoe will start. That sparkplug has been so effective being inserted midway in the 2nd half!
ReplyDeleteIt turns out that the Japanese team is the side with "mentality".
ReplyDeleteUSA! USA! USA! Choke! Choke! Choke!
ReplyDeleteIf they had to lose, I can't think of any team I'd rather see USA lose to than Japan.
