Clipper World Race: Australia-New Zealand

Today sees the Clipper Race fleet start the next leg of the 40,000 miles adventure with the race from Geraldton, Australia to Tauranga, New Zealand.

Race Director, Joff Bailey describes the route:

After a 400 nautical mile upwind leg down the coast of Australia, the teams can start to ease the sheets and head east across the Great Australian Bight. Going south of the rhumb line to get stronger westerly winds may be the fastest option but will add extra miles. The next stage of the race is a dash across the Tasman Sea to the far corner of New Zealand before the final few miles down the east coast to Tauranga.
Dudn't sound like something I would want to do on the real sea. But on the virtual ocean, I would pay to do it!As a matter of fact, I have already paid!

This screen shot was taken 12-Nov 2011 at 0315hrs PST. I have to post this meaningless and fleeting moment just because my leads over Contiguous never last. After shooting this, I immediately gybed on to port, gained nine more boats, and went back to bed. I did not want to watch such a beautiful position erode before my sleepy eyes.

Here's the photo finish. Don't know how the green arrow got in there, but it's pointing at Open Container III, the green hull!

Further comment is diverted to new thread!

  1. Many Players' plotting software has been improved!

  2. Well I guess this is where we all split up ready to meet again in Tauranga, good luck.
Don't know how you are all managing to do more than 1 race at a time.

  3. OC & Kukitol are up there leading the pack. Way to go guys! Nice start.

Plotting software - I like the wind grids but it does take away from the thinking part of the equation.

Now if we can get the VORG to provide bigger wind barbs and move the compass off the stuff you are trying to read and tell me where the distance indicator is then I might continue racing but otherwise I may drop out.

    See you in NZ!

  4. To get rid of the compass click the arrow head to the left of the compass icon near the bottom just above the sail selections and to ger the distance indicator left click and drag on the compass pointer. Hope all this makes sense.

  5. Nice going, Fuckitol! I saw you yesterday where you were under 50!

Contig.: I like getting all the info I can get. The new features are great additions! Whether on real water or virtual water, my statement is "If it ain't digital, it ain't sh*t!"

  6. Thanks for the tips. I knew how to make the compass go away. The problem I have now is that if you are making a course change the compass has to be there and it is very cluttered and difficult to read the wind barbs, wind shadows and other boats all one on top of the other.

The distance indicator is great. I looked everywhere for it. I still have an issue with the fact that you end up changing the course of the boat every time you measure anything and then having to go back and reset your original course. Could be better. Many thanks!!!

  7. Contiguous, Ur a Luddite of the 1st water!

  8. My problem is : how to get my friens in my friens list (the 5 images at the bottom )and same for real boats (can't find them on the search list ). Can anyone help ?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Not a problem for me. I don't have friends.

  10. Sorry Shpruntz, I should've written "FRIENdS" ;-)

  11. ShePuuunt - U got it wrong. Just trying to build a better machine - not destroy it. Constructive criticism can improve the experience for all.

And I can understand why u have no friends.

So - what is your boat's name???

  12. Contig, why don't you try searching for "Spectator Boat". If there's one afloat in the MPs' waters, I'd be betting it's Vlad's boat!

  13. Contiguous has passed you again, Doc. For all of your chatting in here, you might as well call your own yacht "Spectator Boat"!

  14. Just want people to see (above) that I briefly caught Contiguous.

  15. What a difference 12 hrs makes. Way to go Doc. Well done.

(But we are not ready to call the FAT LADY yet. Over 1800 nm yet to sail. Good luck!

  16. I have totally figured it out, Doc. Contiguous is going to totally blow by you in an hour or more. Totally.

  17. Hey contig and container if you are using zero check your course because if your destination is set as Tauranga you probably need to manually set a destination south of the south island you seem to be way too high but I've been wrong before.

  18. Too late, Fukitol! They're fucked. Beyond redemption.

  19. Belladonna - my Transat messaging is not working AGAIN - so -(Multi race) - "I just woke up. It’s 6am here and I’m not awake yet and I only look ahead not back so how could I see you?"

    &

    "Oh – were you there – I rarely look back… ☺"

  20. Hi Cont, now that we are with equal arms (SO), I'm ready to fight with you till Costa-Rica. Be carefull and look back !

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's why I'm here. Although rounding islands before day break and leaving room for you to round as well makes for a sleepy dude. Onward to the finish!

  22. A Plea: My sponsors have informed me that if I don't finish this leg in the top 999 they will withdraw their support. So, if you see OC III astern, please slow down so I can pass you? That would be a big favor, and you would feel like a better person for having done it!

  23. Bella - you're back in front by 9 nm in the Multi Transat Race. You're pretty slippery. Caught me while I was off away from my computer attending 4 different meetings today. I thought they would never end. Should be an interesting finish with 645 mi to go to Costa Rica. With a little luck my maneuver to the west will catch you while you sleep. You do sleep, don't you? Good luck - ha - C

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, Cont, I do sleep. And more of that, I'll be away from my pc tomorrow. So, it'll be difficult to choose the right heading !

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's OK with me if you stay away two days!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Cont, you probably made it in the Clipper, but not yet in the TJV !

    ReplyDelete
  27. Contiguous, I appreciate you heaving-to so that I can pass you. I won't forget the favor.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Congratulations to Fukitol for finishing 84th

    ReplyDelete
  29. Doc I hope you will heave to for me some day. My problem is that I trust those white dots on the course projection tool. NOT !!! I ran aground twice and then right near the end I drifted over the wind line after spending more time than I should have making sure I would not cross the line. Lesson learned - I hope.

Congrats to Kukitol at 84, Doc at 983 and Yatchs of Fun who came in #263. I'm heading to the bar so Doc can buy me a beer!

  30. (God how that man can drink!)

A big thanks to Contiguous for focusing my attention on racing her for the last few hours of this leg. If it were not for my arch-rival, Open Container III might not (probably not) have found herself in the top 1000 for the first time in remaining memory. Thanks to this hyper-intensity induced, I was also able to pick up 31 boats (not enough!) on LMC RKN!

Top accolades go to Fukitol (84th) and Yachts of Fun (263rd)! You two are on my list for the next Leg.

I see No Going Back is within 2 miles of finishing, and Belladonna behind her.

I'ved ordered turkey in abundance sent to my room in their honor, and will delay my departure to the States to celebrate Thanksgiving until Bella is well-fed!

  31. I just couldn't get Contig to tell me why he tacked over on to starboard as early as he did. Before that, footing off at 45 degrees on port he had me worried. I totally suspect what the reason was, but I'm not about to give it up first. Especially 'cause I've sobered up!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Just Belladonna to finish now, drinks waiting. Well done to all and lets hope we don't get another final 12 hours to a race like this one.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hope that when I finally come in,I coud find a beer or two and a piece of turkey left.
Congrats to Cont, you finaly made it. Congrats to all the others too. I'll try to sleep a little less in next leg.
Tomorrow I'll be involved only in the VOR, fighting with NGB and Contiguous that I know. If any other of you in that race, let me know.
