The official race news for on the water race gives the start time as 1700 local time.
According to Time and Date dot Com, that makes the start time in about 1 hour, PSDT.
But the Many Players' race Committee site for the virtual race says the start is still five hours from now.
What gives?
Maybe Fukitol can explain it to me. There's no substitute for local knowledge.

In the real race, this leg would figure to be the coldest, wind-chilled trip. Especially with a windward beat to start with!
ReplyDeleteLocal has strange meanings around these parts.

So much for being "local", I decided to give you all a heads start by running aground in the first 20 mins. This does not bode well for this leg. Must take a tablet of my own name.
DeleteDoc, this is NOT the last leg. The race ends in Southampton, UK. See http://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/index.php/the-race/race-finish-schedule/
ReplyDeleteDen Helder is a stop-over. Last leg Den Helder to Southampton starts July 19 @ 12.30 CEST (GMT+2).
Now regarding local times, G.B. is GMT+1 while the rest of Continental Europ is GMT+2. These bloody islanders never do the same as us ! They drive left, for instance, which is sometimes boring !
Here I am, awake at 0211hrs. Hope you guys are deriving some satisfaction from the fact that my eyes are stinging.
ReplyDeleteSatisfaction - not from your red stinging eyes (with out salt water spray) but from an exciting tacking dual which seems to be rare experience in this trade wind world of ours. Seems we can pass many long days with out having to tack. Now we have to think, to plan, to strategise just to stay off the rocky coast of virtual embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Contiq!
DeleteI'm just glad that in addition to worrying about getting sleep, I don't have to bother my self about RRS's, ducking you guys or getting lee-bowed. (Actually, maybe, I kind of miss that....)
DeleteEspecially at night when you see that port running light bearing down and you're having a difficult time judging distance. Exciting!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Well done to Contiguous, only 10 or so miles to go and he's 24 places in front of me, get the drinks in
ReplyDeleteComing in at 199 - under 200 - is doubly sweet when I find myself finishing a mere 5 nm in front of the famous Fukitol. Drinks are definitely on me. I'll be up at the yacht club bar!
ReplyDeleteThe Way Points came in handy last night. I was impressed with how well they worked. The last time I tried them they were very klutzy. (maybe a year ago?) I may not have needed them but they let me sleep through the 2am wx.
Don't know if you've seen these pics yet but check out the Ranger regatta off Falmouth earlier this month. check out the links also: <http://www.jclassfalmouthregatta.com/gallery.html
Great photos of J's, Contig! And thanks for changing the subject!
DeleteHow did I do? How did I do! I should have finished by now. But I can't tell! Many Players won't load but 50%. What's up with that? Can anyone tell me how I did?????
ReplyDeleteConiguous 199th

ReplyDeleteIncredible!
DeleteLast leg starts Thursday 12:30pm game time, 11:30am BST, 10:30am GMT, which if I have it right is 03:30am PST.
ReplyDeleteNot a great time for you Doc.
Good luck to all.
Thanks for the good news (one last time to redeem myself) and the bad news (the start time)!
