Our 15½ nm trophy race ended today with a whimper. Five out of the 16 starters finished. Short of the halfway mark, I was outvoted by all aboard to turn back. There was no wind to beat the current.
Nothing disturbed the water surface except an occasional whale. If the crew hadn't stepped up and mutinied, demanding that we fire up ol' sparky, we would be finishing tomorrow morning. And I probably would not have been alive, if aboard. I fell heavily on board after we docked. I was trying to move lively around on the boat and my legs just cannot do the simplest task assigned to them any more. This beautiful boat will kill me. I need to get her out of my life in order to save both of us.

Conspicuously absent above are any complaints about weather conditions. Mindfulness of Farallones, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteYes, and mindful of Saturday's conditions in our own venue. Those were wooly, too, with 25 knots and huge seas. Learning to take what nature has to offer with no gripping. That doesn't shield race committees, though.
DeleteI'm terrible at doing anything that involves balancing while standing up too. That's why I sail an easy boat where I can sit down all the time.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I want. And need.
DeleteBut what if you need to poop?
DeleteJust do it.
DeleteSome Laser sailors never wore clothes before they purchased their first boat.
ReplyDeletePics or it didn't happen.
DeleteSorry to read about your fall Doc, and hope you are not too badly shaken.
ReplyDeleteWhat Paula said.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Guys.
DeleteThat photo just doesn't represent Sunday's conditions. I have never seen such a vacuum out there. If the water could ever resemble a desert. that was the time. Death Valley.
ReplyDeleteNo. I've seen and been on Death Valley of the seas before. That's mirror flat without any memory of wind recorded on the surface. Sunday was more like the Sahara desert. It was that vast a wasteland. No wind. No heat, either. Wasteland.
DeleteBut I'm not complaining! No, Mother Nature! This is not me complaining!
We've been lured out onto the lake only to have the air become still and the water flat. Happily, a 14 foot boat can be paddled easily while remaining steated. I hope you can change to a boat that isn't so hard your knees, and that your body can heal quickly. Is Benny Hinn coming to town?
ReplyDeleteBenny Hinn??????
Deletenotorious faith healer for your aches and pains :)
