Why I Don't Watch American-Style (Pointy) Football

It's an overly-commercialized, boring and time consuming past-time waste-time. Not to mention a classic bait and switch.

According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.

In other words, if you tally up everything that happens between the time the ball is snapped and the play is whistled dead by the officials, there's barely enough time to prepare a hard-boiled egg. In fact, the average telecast devotes 56% more time to showing replays.

The most surprising finding of The Journal's study—that the average game has just 10 minutes and 43 seconds of actual playing time—has been corroborated by other researchers.

To my mind that's comparable to a geriatric tennis match! Why would I want to watch that? I can't even play tennis any more....

But I place a lot of hope in evolution!

  1. I wonder if football is comparable to (non-geriatric) Major League Baseball games.

  2. You thought you'd coax a comment out of me, didn't you?

  4. I wonder how much time the ball is actually in motion when someone plays 18 holes of a golf course, taking a few hours. Tennis probably does better by this measure.

  5. Which is another way of saying the USA will never catch on. But WTF?

Isn't the point that among yachtsmen, pseudo-football fans would tend to sail these, while true-football fans would sail these?

  6. I agree with you. Pointy football is very boring to watch.

  7. Well, Baydog, will you feel better if I told you I dined on Sunday, as opposed to having fed?

  9. Does that explain why you snatch back from the table the juiciest comments just before I pounce?

  10. Maybe. I'm a lover, not a fighter.
    To each his own.

  11. Careful, Carol Anne likes Amerikanski footy-ball. She may come up with some comments on fake fainting Euro futballers.

  12. Actually, we may disagree about football, but we agree on baseball ... Yea, Dodgers!

  13. Carol Anne: Ditto on the Dodgers. Except that they shoulda coulda woulda traded Frank & Jamie to the White Sox instead of Manny!

  14. I would hope we could agree on the designated hitter rule, too! (Out with it!)
