The Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race - Leg 15

The world’s longest ocean race is drawing to a close, as the final 260-mile leg back to Southampton, UK starts tomorrow.

This final three-day sprint departs from Den Helder, on the most northern coast of the Netherlands.

We will be there, on the water.

Virtually.

  1. I'm off to a good start. But anytime Fukitol is taking a different tack, I'm deeply concerned. I've been thinking for some time he has some commercial charting technology on his desk top. Nothing wrong with that, of course. And I'm not sayin', just surmising . . . .

  2. Who me, never not no how, as if I would.!!!!
Only using what is readily available to us all and what I have said I use in previous posts, thing is this game only changes wind forecasts every 12 hours and uses a certain time wind forecast, you have to use these to ones advantage, but I'm not that good this year as last time I finished 54th overall, this year nearly 100 places worse.
Mind you I have slept more on a night this time instead of waking up every few hours to check things out.
We must all remember it's all a game and you do better in the real world Doc, better there than the virtual world.
Plus in the real world I only sail toy boats now, ( too knackered to sail the real thing anymore ) so I now race an international class of radio controlled yachts, and locally I do a lot better with them than with this clipper and believe me the races are very hard fought.

  3. Hi Doc ! Still in Turkey for a few days, real hot weather (40°C) but we had enough of the terrible belgian weather ! That's why I don't post a lot.
By the way, you could have named this one (leg) "The last one".
What shall we do next, awaiting for the Vendee Globe ?
    Any idea you guy's ???

  4. 11 months of sailing coming to an end. It's been fun! Thanks Doc for hosting the web and thanks to all the competitors that make it fun ie Belladonna, Fukitol, Paula, etc. and all of Doc's mystery friends, who ever they are. I'm going up to the bar as soon as I finish so I can have Fukitol buy me a beer! Nice race all!

  5. As Fukitol says above, I'm so knockered I'm not qualified to sail OPB any more. Today, I sent out a series of emails, trying to get a position on H-20. They're having a two-day one-design regatta this weekend. I emailed all of the boats who hadn't registered by this morning. I asked if they knew "anyone who could use an old geezer to crew for them"? No responses. Maybe there was some wrong with my approach? Maybe I was implying that their boats were so tame as to accommodate old geezers? I don't think that was my thinking. Maybe the thought to crew came to me too late, at the last minute, that sort of thing.

Well, at any rate, I'll look forward to racing with you guys in the future in our Virtual Waters. I can't promise to try harder. I can only promise to do better.

  6. Hey Guys! Sorry i missed the last leg of Clipper. I was mad busy doing admininsration stuff with the ISAF Youth Worlds which took place in my home town of Dun Laoghaire from 12 - 21 July. By the time the event started, most of my work ws done and I was able to enjoy the event with a lot of socialising in the Yacht Clubs. Yep Doc, I also look forward to racing with you guys again soon!

    1. Yep, above link is a great flavour of the event! I was on the 'Meet and Greet' team which involved organising volunteers and various social events.

  7. PS... Did I mention that I managed to get to Galway for the Volvo ocean Race? I had a quay side seat when the first four boats started arriving around 2am and I eventually got to bed at 6am. Deadly buzz and delighted to have been there!!

I leave that to the professionals! One of the official photographers is an aquaintance and I don't want to put him under pressure. lol
